Spider™ EEG Electrodes FAQs
Utilize advanced technology and take advantage of the Spider EEG Electrodes flat design. Spider EEG Electrodes provide two levels of advantages that serve both the patient and the clinician.
Greater Patient Comfort: The unique, flat surface provides a drastic difference in comfort for patients during procedures. The lead's web design is recessed from the small edging of the electrode so that only a small amount of metal is in contact with the skin thereby reducing skin integrity issues. The Spider EEG Electrode is a great alternative for patients where skin integrity is an issue during clinical and long-term recording procedures.
More stable impedances and recording quality for a longer period of time: Immediately upon adding the paste/gel to a traditional cup, the conductive material begins to "melt" or dissipate out of the cup space. Because the conductive material is no longer evenly distributed, conductivity varies [which can cause imbalanced impedances, lower qualityrecordings and electrode popping] occur.
The new design of the Spider EEG Electrode traps conductive material within the webbing, bonding it to the skin, which results in much slower dissipation, more consistent impedances and cleaner recordings for longer periods of time.
How do I apply the Spider EEG Electrode to the patient?
Use the same method as any other EEG Cup Electrode, but apply less paste/gel. The lead is designed specifically for efficient use of paste, so less is required. You only need enough paste/gel to completely fill the webbed area of the Spider EEG Electrode.
Can I use collodion?
Yes. Collodion can be used on top of the electrode. It is recommended to apply the conductive material to the Spider electrode first, and then use your preferred method to apply the collodion on top of the lead. If needed, a small amount of additional paste/gel can be added through any entry point in the collodion.
How do I clean them?
Clean the Spider EEG Electrodes in the same manner you would clean any other reusable electrode. If skin was abraded with NuPrep™ or any other abrasive use appropriate cleaning and disinfecting protocols and chemicals. Do not sterilize.
Are Spider EEG Electrodes as durable as traditional cup electrodes?
Yes. Spider EEG Electrodes will last as long as a standard EEG Cup Electrode. Made of pure silver with a coating of either gold or silver/silver-chloride, the Spider EEG Electrode is a durable, reliable choice for EEG monitoring.
Can I use this lead on the patient along with a standard cup electrode?
Absolutely. A gold Spider Electrode can be used with a standard Gold cup electrode. Likewise, a silver/silver-chloride Spider EEG Electrode can be used with a standard silver/silver-chloride cup. This unique design will not cause any dissimilar metal artifact if used with a standard cup electrode of the same material. Additionally, our recommendation is to ensure the same paste type is used with all electrodes.
Summary
The Rhythmlink Spider EEG Electrode is an innovative alternative to the traditional EEG Cup Electrode thanks to its special design, construction and light-weight cable. Made with patient comfort in mind, our Spider EEG Electrodes feature a flat, webbed design that provides superior adhesion and a higher quality of recording over extended periods of time.
